One way to save on energy costs is to place ice and soft drink vending machines in shaded area.

A device, called a VendingMiser, that can be placed in certain vending machines to turn them on and off according to whether anyone is near them. It reduces energy consumption, saving both costs and the environment. This device has been successfully used at Harvard University
